Xorgtron Soldering Workshop by Rübezahl The Xorgtron is a all analog chaotic noise Synthesizer, with many controls that can produce a multitude of unexpected sounds. Don’t try too hard to understand what is happening, the three light sensors, 8 switches and 5 rotary knobs make it hard to get the same sound a second time. But in that lies it’s beauty: The Synthesizer has a life of it’s own and it’s up to us to interact with it: You can try to tame it, but in the end it is a wild spirit and we better appreciate it 🙂 A special feature is the drum function: With a switch we can set it so that the Xorgtron turns into a Xorgdrum, now its sounds are triggered by a pushbutton and otherwise will shut up. In this workshop we will assemble and solder the Xorgtron all by ourselves, under the guidance of the designer Ruben Rübe himself. The Synth comes in a barebone PCB design in the shape of an UFO, making it not too challenging to solder. It is a suitable project for beginners, and all needed knowledge and tools will be provided. We will also learn a bit about how the circuit functions, and how to get some cool sounds out of it.

About the teacher: Ruben Rübe, also known as Rübezahl, is an electronic musician and instrument builder based in Taiwan. For many years he is creating his own electronic instruments like synthesizers and effect units. Mostly employing classic analogue electronics and being self thought he is very enthusiastic about spreading his knowledge and passion for creating electronic sounds from scratch. In the last years he teached many classes from little kids to grown ups, public or at institutions like among others the Shih Chien University or the Taiwan University of Arts. For the summer he is now visiting Europe and passing by Setzkasten Vienna to offer this class.
